The Görres window, 1855
This window was donated in memory of the scholar and Catholic publicist Joseph Görres (17761848). In 1814, Görres was the first to call for the completion of Cologne Cathedral. The fact that he publicly and repeatedly took the part of the Catholic Church in conflicts between the Church and the Prussian State explains why his friends were allowed to erect this memorial to him in the cathedral. The window, which was made in the Royal Stained Glass Manufactory in Munich, was installed in 1856. The main scene shows Joseph Görres kneeling before Mary and the Christ Child. St Boniface and Charlemagne are depicted in the lower part of the window.
