Standard NH, Eagle with young ones

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

The spandrel of the stringer shows an eagle which flies with a young one in his claws into the sun. Under the eagle is the nest with two more young ones. The depiction of an eagle flying to the sun with a young one often serves to symbolize the Ascension of Christ. In the present case a test for the young ones might also be intended: the eagle approaches the sun with a young one and disowns him who cannot stand the sunlight. The knob below the sun does not belong to the spandrel and shows Samson battling the Lion. (MS)
