Prophet Habakkuk

The prophets on the so-called ‘Solomon side’ of the shrine were created around 1190 in the workshop of Nicholas of Verdun, one of the most important artists in the western world of the Middle Ages, in the region of the river Meuse. The prophets of the Old Testament are framed by richly decorated enamelled trefoil arches and columns. The influence of Roman art is evident in the dynamic postures of the figures, the emphasis on the body beneath the richly fashioned garments, and the expressive, individualistic faces. The style of these figures influenced the monumental sculptures of Gothic cathedrals.
