General information on group visits

General information on group visits

All guided tours at Cologne Cathedral must be registered in advance and may be conducted only by authorized or registered Cathedral guides. Private individuals, groups or travel agencies must therefore book a guided group tour at Cologne Cathedral via either the Cologne Tourist Board or the DOMFORUM. As was previously the case, the Cathedral is open to individual visitors without restrictions whenever services are not being held.
The individual tours will be scheduled during the time periods reserved for tours. The number of tours is limited to ten tours per hour, and the size of the groups is limited to 25 people.
In addition, all group tours must be equipped with group guidance systems. These are radio-operated audio systems; each visitor is issued a small receiver and a headset to which the tour guide's remarks are transmitted through a microphone. The use of different frequencies makes it possible to conduct several group tours at the same time in the same area without interference. One objective of this sys-tem is to keep down the noise level within the Cathedral, thus helping to safeguard the interests of visi-tor groups and worshipers alike. In addition, this technology enables the participants to understand more clearly the explanations provided by their Cathedral guides.
A fee is charged for each group, and an additional rental fee is charged for each group guidance system issued to an individual visitor. Groups that may have already brought group guidance systems with them must pay a flat service fee. However, groups of children or young people receive the group guidance system free of charge. Children's groups are required to use a group guidance system only starting with the fifth school year.
