Otto Bussmann’s sculpture of St Joseph, 1935

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

The gilded wooden sculpture created for the cathedral in 1935 by the Düsseldorf sculptor Otto Bussmann should be seen in the light of the revival of popular devotion to St Joseph in the nineteenth century, which focussed on the image of Joseph as a hard-working carpenter providing for his family. It is now located at the southern entrance to the choir. The bearded carpenter, dressed in a robe and cloak, holds his right hand protectively over a miniature model of the cathedral.
