The dove of the Holy Spirit, which accompanies the message of the Angel Gabriel, hovers above the head of the Virgin in the Annunciation scene. Although the dove is one Person of the Holy Trinity, it is not depicted here in a highly stylised manner, but is instead represented as a naturalistic bird in flight. Stefan Lochner was the first representative of the Cologne school of painting in the fifteenth century to use natural reality to underpin the credibility of miraculous events. In this respect, Lochner was influenced by Jan van Eyck and possibly also early Italian Renaissance painters.
