St Gereon and St Maurice were soldiers in the Theban Legion and as such are depicted here as knights dressed in fourteenth century armour. Both saints stand underneath richly decorated Gothic canopies. The architectural details clearly suggest that the designer was not only familiar with the architecture of the cathedral, but also borrowed some motifs from the plan of the façade known as ‘Plan F’. Each canopy features two tower musicians: a shawm and tambourine player in one and a bagpipe player and a horn player in the other. Atop each canopy are two angels, each of which holds out a crown of life to the Theban soldiers below.
