The right-hand side of the scene shows St Peter being given the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Christ entrusts St Peter with the pastoral ministry of the entire Church with the words: ‘Tend my sheep’. The left-hand scene shows Pope Pius IX on his knees. He is accompanied by an angel. In his hand the Pope holds the Bull of Convocation (a bull is a papal decree) for the First Vatican Council of 1869/70 at which papal infallibility in matters of faith became official Church dogma. The decision was highly controversial within the Church. The depiction of Pope Pius IX in this window can, therefore, be interpreted as an open declaration of support for the papacy.
