Archbishop Gunthar had a politically eminent position in the middle kingdom as the arch curiate of Lothar II. Two synods over which he presided annulled the childless marriage between Lothar and Theutberga for reasons that were not later upheld. Lothar II wanted to marry Waldrada, with whom he already had a son. Gunthar was then removed from office by Pope Nicholas I and excommunicated. Seeking support from his clergy, he undertook a conveyance of goods that provided the clerical communities, in addition to the archbishop, with an identifiable economic foundation. In the end Gunthar was readmitted to the church as a layman. He was probably the builder of the Old Cathedral.
