Archbishop Friedrich I von Schwarzenburg was descended from Bavarian nobility. He fought together with Heinrich V in Rome, but later changed to the party of the church. In 1112 Friedrich ordained St. Norbert priest in Cologne Cathedral. He engaged in territorial politics more than any previous bishop. He built Castle Wolkenburg in the Seven Mountains, and Castle Rolandseck. As secular ruler he invested the nobility of the Rhine with fiefdoms according to his plan. Numerous foundations are to his credit: Camp Abbey, Nonnewerth Cloister, and the Provost Districts of Zülpich and Remagen.
