Archbishop Arnold I. (von Merxheim?)

Period of office 1137-1151

Archbishop Arnold I von Merzheim was descended from Rhineland nobility. He participated in the election of the first Hohenstauffen king, Konrad III. During his tenure St. Bernhard von Clairvaux preached in Cologne Cathedral in support of the Second Crusade. In 1146 he was able to successfully protect the Jews of Cologne from persecution. In 1148 he was suspended in Reims by Pope Eugen III for simony and careless administration.
