Archbishop Arnold II von Wied, who at the time of his predecessor's suspension was handling the administration as Cathedral Provost, was unanimously chosen Bishop of Cologne in 1151. From 1138 on he had been Imperial Chancellor. In 1151 Konrad II made him Duke of the Rhineland. This important statesman crowned Kaiser Barbarossa in Aachen in 1152. Arnold founded the Benedictine cloister in Schwarzrheindorf, where he also built the famous Double Church, and where he was buried.
