Archbishop Dietrich I von Hengebach became Archbishop of Cologne through the influence of Otto IV. For Otto VI, who had been exiled, he held the Bishop of Münster prisoner in Kaiserswerth. He was then excommunicated by the Pope in 1212. When he continued to act as priest and bishop he was removed from office by a papal legation and a new election was called for.
