Ferdinand August Count von Spiegel was the first Archbishop in the newly reestablished Cologne Archdiocese. He studied in Fulda and Münster and was named Archbishop at the suggestion of the Prussian government by Pope Leo XII. He reorganized the Archdiocese and took a strong stand for church interests against the Prussian state. Ferdinand August was especially concerned with the quality of religious life among the laity and also concerned himself with the new generation of priests.
