Archbishop Philipp Cardinal Krementz was born in Koblenz the son of a butcher. He studied in Bonn and Trier and was pastor at St. Kastor in Koblenz. From 1867-1885 he was Bishop of Ermland. Krementz tried successfully to reestablish religious life in the Archdiocese and created 62 new parishes. In 1886 Krementz reopened the Cologne Seminary.
