Archbishop Hubert Theophil (Hubertus Theophilus) Simar was a professor of theology in Bonn and from 1891 on, Bishop of Paderborn. Kaiser Wilhelm and the Prussian state wanted him as Archbishop of Cologne, and he was actually chosen by the Chapter. But the intervention of the state led to tensions with Rome, with the result that Simar was confirmed as Bishop, but not elevated to the College of Cardinals. After a short pontificate filled with blessings he died of pneumonia caught during a visitation journey.
