Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Höffner was born in Horhausen/Westerwald as son of a farmer on December 24th, 1906. In 1932 he was ordained as a priest in Rome. From 1962-1969 he was Coadjutor to Cardinal Frings, who was beginning to go blind. In 1969 he was elected Archbishop of Cologne. Cardinal Höffner was twice chair of the German Bishops' Conference and effectively promoted reconciliation with the Polish bishops. His advice was valued not only by the government of the Federal Republic, but also in Rome. In his time he was among the most influential bishops of the world church.
