Candle beam of the Cologne Guild of Pewterers

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

The medieval candle beam donated by the Cologne Guild of Pewterers, which was discovered in 1949 inside a Baroque casing to which the Late Gothic candle rack is still attached, was returned to its original location at the north-western end of the Lady Chapel in August 1994. The side facing into the Lady Chapel features 13 scenes from the life of the Virgin. Starting with the Annunciation, the cycle focuses above all on events in the early childhood of Christ and ends with the death and coronation of the Virgin. The painted scenes, parts of which are missing, belong to the Cologne school of painting and were created sometime around the year 1400.
