Crucifixion Altar, c.1500, open view

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

The middle section of this altar-piece is shaped like a box and contains a carved Crucifixion group including Mary and St John the Evangelist. It is likely that the carvings were made in a Middle Rhine workshop sometime around the year 1500. St John the Baptist and St Lawrence are depicted on the left-hand wing and St James and St Stephen on the right-hand wing.
