One of the most important stations for pilgrims as they progress around the ambulatory is the tomb holding the relics of St Irmgard of Zutphen (Süchteln), which stands in the middle of the Chapel of St Agnes. A mural on the north wall of the chapel shows Irmgard making a gift of Castle Aspel to the archiepiscopal state of Cologne. The central panel shows the saint on the left and St Peter, as one of the cathedral’s two patron saints, on the right. Between them is a fantasy building that symbolises Castle Aspel. The generous donation is witnessed by a group of women in the left-hand panel and a group of men in the right-hand panel. The mural is intended to show pilgrims the benefits that accrue from making gifts to the cathedral.
