St Anthony of Padua, late nineteenth century

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

St Anthony of Padua’s enormous popularity among the faithful led to the complete restoration of this pine carving, which was damaged during the war and had been in storage for many years. As part of the restoration process, missing parts were replaced and damaged paintwork was repaired. In January 1993, this historical late nineteenth-century carving of St Anthony of Padua was returned to the cathedral. As the patron saint of those seeking lost articles and of loving couples, St Anthony of Padua is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic Church.
