Each of the choir chapels has a medieval aumbry, two of which were given new wooden doors decorated with tracery and decorative iron fittings around 1890. The historical design of the aumbry doors was the work of the Utrecht-based architect Wilhelm Mengelberg, who created a number of Neo-Gothic furnishings for Cologne Cathedral. While the aumbry in the axial chapel was used for storing relics, the aumbry shown here in the Chapel of St Stephen is still used to keep consecrated oils. This is indicated by the words ‘SACRA OLEA’ on the door.
