Head of the Angel of the Annunciation

Photo: © Dombauhütte Köln, Matz und Schenk

The angel of the Annunciation is depicted passing God’s message in the form of a letter bearing God’s seal. He bows his head gently to Mary as a sign of humility. His long, flowing hair indicates that the heavenly messenger, like Mary, is a virgin. The angel wears a cope that is closed using a magnificent gold clasp. The vibrant red colour of the cloak and the fact that the angel’s complexion is somewhat darker than that of the Virgin despite its delicate and glazed appearance emphasise the tender, almost transparent appearance of Mary.
